Smallpox is a freeware PDF converter, editor, scanner, and viewer. This is also a PDF utility app. Download the free version now. In case you have been following my work for some time and don't know what I think about the future of PDF software, I'll just leave you here: PDF is doomed! It really is; as such, it shouldn't be allowed in our mobile devices of today even with the ability to use it, yet it's everywhere. There is an app for nearly every purpose for viewing, editing, converting and creating PDFs from your computer. That's just not going to work, because none of these apps will be able to do what Smallpox just can. This may sound like sarcasm as I've been saying the same thing since my first piece in May 2008, but I'm serious about this, and a lot of the technology I'm seeing in the world around me is just so radically changing what's possible within our world today that nothing anyone does today will look as though it works in five years time. PDF isn't just for books anymore, it's for everything from music to software to apps and even things like mobile phone app icons. PDF is dying, and will be soon. The way I see it is there are three primary markets today, and each will die. First, there's the e-book market. Books are selling like hotcakes, yet they have to be DRM-encumbered, which is what forces publishers to keep selling their books digitally. I think we're going to see book publishers start to die and the e-book market die out when e-books are finally free on most devices and everyone can read them without worrying about DRM. Second, there's the music market. Most artists who get paid for music nowadays are paid using DRM. I think we are going to end music labels as a business model altogether in all forms. Third, there's the application market, which will be the second market to die. The current apps are not optimized for PDF, which is also a symptom of the app market dying out, because mobile devices don't have a native PDF app. But that doesn't mean there aren't going to be applications like Smallpox that can convert a PDF file into a readable Word file. And, of course, apps that do everything will have a dominant place in the mobile application market. Smallpox is going to be the best PDF app for that.
