Recently a concerned teacher (Chris) brought us some evidence of concerning practices at h school Chris had written some assessment gelines for Year 9 students put them to print and then another teacher (Sam) haded that Chris did not provide a copy for Year 8 (a task which had been allocated to Sam). Samed loudly and started an email chain that went up through the head teacher to the deputy principal or principal and then back down again demanding that Chris hand over the assessment geline document so that Sam could produce a version for Year 8. Note that Sam contribution to most teaching resources to date had been large volumes of photocopied extracts from online pages or books. We wouldn even say various pages or books because usually they seemed to be single unacknowledged sources. So now we had this column of executive staff passing pressure down the hierarchy for Chris to release the original version of the gelines so Sam could do whatever Sam was going to do with them. Naturally Chris refused would you give your hard work away to this person? Thanks for the A2A What's the best alternative to Vellum for book formatting? I own a PC. I cannot attest to what the best alternative is. I have not tried them all and honestly once I figure something out I tend to stick with it rather than using up precious time learning new things that may or may not work better. Depending upon what you want to do I have a couple of suggestions for you. If you are just looking for something that will format a book for you pretty quick easy and cheap I would rmend giving Draft2Digital free online converter. Put in a clean word doc and you will get out a pretty decent e-book or PDF to use for print book. Make sure you look it over for strange things though as it is automated and strange things happen if you leave in strange formatting in your document. Did I mention it was free? Honestly for that price it is really good. If you want to make your own e-books and take control of what things look like (as in you mess with formatting and images like I am prone to do) I suggest looking into Jutoh. (I have never used Jutoh Plus so I can say if that is worth it.) Even with Jutoh you tend to need other programs like Kindle for PC Adobe Digital Editions and Calibre to check out how your epubs look when you open them. You should be doing this anyway no matter what software you use to create to check for errors. As far as making PDFs for print I use MS Word. I know a lot of people don like that but I think it works just fine and I can afford to pay for Adobe InDesign on a monthly basis. Are those the best? I don know.
