What's the best way to digitize my book collection?
Google has already done this. But you can buy them new as e-books for less than the cost of the scanning. Read this How to Digitize Your Textbooks eBook readers are quickly bing the go-to method to read print media. Perhaps the most exciting advantage is the ability to carry thousands of books on a thin device. Yes students this means you could condense a semesters worth of heavy books into a few thousand bytes on your Kindle Nook or iPad. Textbook publishers are charging forward through this new frontier of media distribution but unfortunately only a small portion of books are available for download today. What do you do if your microbiology isn available in a digital format this fall? Option #1 Textbook Scanning Services n There are several online services that will scan a book and return a PDF document of its contents. BlueLeaf appears to be the the front-runner in this game charging $.6 per page for destructive scanning and $.9 for non-destructive scanning in addition to a fee per book of $ and $ respectively. To ease the gouging BlueLeaf will scan your first 5 pages for free. Full color scans are an additional $12 and if youre gullible enough to have them convert the PDF to a PRC or ePub file itll cost you another $12 (this can be aplished for free with Calibre ). To give you a better idea of pricing to scan three books totaling 1956 pages for this uing semester non-destructive scanning in color would cost me $218. Option #2 Build a Book Scanner n is an awesome project offeringmunity-designed blueprints for making your own non-destructive book scanner. Once built these scanners take pictures of each page of the book you wish to digitize using two tethered cameras. The cost of the hardware is the greatest downfall to this method although if you want to keep your book intact this is the way to go. Option #3 Chop & Scan n If yourefortable with cutting up a book running the pages through a scanner with an automatic document feeder is by far the cheapest method to digitze a book. Here how to do it Step 1 italic Each book is bound a little differently. Your goal is to dissect the book so that you have several booklets of pages. Step 2 italic Cut the booklets along the left margin to obtain single pages. This is easily aplished with a paper cutter. Step 3 italic Insert the pages into the document feeder of your scanner. Scan the fronts of all the pages and save as a PDF then flip and scan the backs. Step 4 italic Download and install PDFsam a free multi-platform PDF tool. Load the front and back PDF files into the Alternate Mix plugin which willbine the two files and place the pages into the proper order. Step 5 italic Convert the PDF scan of your book into a format your eBook reader can read using Calibre . Each method varies in cost and effort required. At the end of the day the convenience of reading books on yourputer at home eBook reader on campus or your smartphone while waiting for the bus is well worth it.

Where did you learn how to operate a CNC machine?
To be succinct on the job. From someone else running the machine. To be more precise at home in front of the TV with my laptop on. Sometimes on a ride to work many times in the bathroom. Once you know the basics power switch load program green button then operating is just loading parts. Every machine has a different procedure and the manufacturer will most likely train you on site or at their offices. One manufacturer that has a great training program is Stiles Machinery. They focus more on industrial wood and building materials processing and sell some of the most badass machines in the market - especially for panel processing. SCM makes the best equipped window and door machining centers and I enjoy using their products as well. Perhaps you're interested in machining metals you'll use a different machine. Just one problem You see operating a cnc is 1u66a about loading materials and selecting programs and 9% figuring out how to be more efficient. Oh by the way thats just the operation side of it. Programming is by far more important than operation. Here's one example. Several years ago the owner of apany I worked for had decided that CNC was the next thing his manufacturing business needed to remainpetitive. Unfortunately his product line didnt lend itself to be efficiently run on a CNC. Every program was one time use then into the garbage bin. Though not terriblyplex or varied eachponent was different. Similar but different. Being the young driven and mentally unwilling to program the same part for the rest of my days there I decided I needed to automate myself out of a job. I needed to go directly from the salesman's notes and measurements to the shop floor in one to three mouse clicks with no error. What I needed to learn was parametrics. The key to building versatile parametric programs is knowing your product. Once I had a model in my head of how to drive the features of eachponent I began creating a rules based system to create parts. What I created is still being used daily more than 6 years later without error or crashes. I created a web based form that created DXF's of each part with every feature and geometry and saved them into a folder that our CAM software would open and apply toolpaths to automatically. The programs would be made available on the CNC almost immediately after the form was filled out. The bottleneck was no longer programming. I freed myself from that job and while they still pay me to maintain their system I charge very little as its not a challenge. I moved on to bigger systems always trying to learn more. I now manage a small team of programmers who I continually challenge to find faster better ways of machining and programming parts. But I learned how to turn the machine on from Fred Willis may he rest in peace.

Everyone must leave something behind when he dies my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted you're there. It doesn't matter what you do he said so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that's like you after you take your hands away. The difference between the man who just cuts lawns and a real gardener is in the touching he said. The lawn-cutter might just as well not have been there at all; the gardener will be there a lifetime.
